| Stacey Gehrman and Gillie
8-07
After a long life in dog training with many wonderful dogs, Gillie is the first Border Collie I have owned. She is such a joy to train and easy to live with that she is more partner than dog. It's not that she doesn't have challenges. Oh yes. She learns quickly and is ready to move on. Don't bore a BC or they get cheeky with you! They will invent diversions if their handler isn't tuned in. Sometimes she tells me when I make a wrong move or give a late command and caused her to make an error. If you hear a sharp bark on the course you'll know I messed up. When we practice, I often think she's the one who is doing the training; "Come on Mom, give that command at the right time and move in the right direction. Oh good grief. Well, let's do it again Mom." But, she does give me lots of BC hugs, snuggles and licks,
and brings her ball or toy to me so I can play with it too. So I would say
she trains with positive reinforcement. (She also has my husband trained.) We both enjoy training with Mary. When Mary runs one of her dogs, Gillie
watches. She doesn't watch everyone run, just certain people. Mary is her
favorite.
