Congratulations to Kathy Phelan and Dusty Boots A-Flying for earning their NATCH 2 on 2-13-11 in Elma WA, their NATCH and Versatility NATCH both in May 2010!  They began competing in late 2007 and have been having a wonderful time.  They are real crowd-pleasers!  Following is Kathy's story:

A year after I retired as president of the Idaho Education Association I found a wonderful little speckle-footed 4-month old Aussie that I took into my heart and home and named Dusty Boots.

I quickly discovered that Dusty is smart, eager to please, and boy is she an inquisitive and busy girl!

After spending 4 months getting to know each other I decided she’d really blossom if we found an activity to do together - something that would challenge us to keep mentally and physically fit.

Agility!  Perfect!

I looked for the very best agility teacher I could find  - someone who offered classes close to our home in McCall.  Luckily we found Mary Hunter right next door in Eagle.

From the beginning Mary was terrific - a firm, supportive teacher. Dusty caught on to everything right away.  Me? …Not so much.

At our first “obedience for agility” lesson Dusty fell in love with Mary and Dani, and I’m convinced she learned everything she knows by watching them work together. What a terrific team!

Mary’s expertise, patience, encouragement, and no-nonsense approach have made our first year of agility so much fun. (And successful, too, once I stopped getting lost on agility courses.)

Our first agility trial was November 2007 when Dusty was 18 months old. There she qualified and won first place in 3 events: regular, jumpers, and touch-n-go. Now, 10 months later she has earned a novice versatility award and novice titles in all NADAC events; outstanding novice titles in regular, jumpers, tunnelers, and weavers; and a superior novice title in jumpers.

I’ve changed her name to Dusty Boots A-Flying.  She’s amazing!

Agility is so much fun!

Mary Hunter is a fantastic teacher!

PS. You meet a lot of really neat dog people when you participate in agility!
